The programme
The evening
In this extraordinary memorial concert, the Philharmonia marks its return to the Berlin Philharmonie in a concert that pays tribute to the musical legacy of Giuseppe Sinopoli, the Orchestra’s Principal Conductor between 1984 and 1994.
25 years after Sinopoli’s untimely death aged 54, this concert opens with the yearning beauty of Wagner’s Prelude and Liebestod from his opera Tristan und Isolde, a work and a composer Sinopoli was closely associated with. Sinopoli’s own composition Pour un Livre à Venise follows, a tribute to his birthplace full of the vitality, breadth, and energy Sinopoli’s performances were known for.
Robin Ticciati conducts the Philharmonia in Dvořák’s bright and lyrical Symphony No. 8 to close an evening in tribute to a musician, composer, and intellectual whose artistic legacy left a profound mark on the Philharmonia Orchestra and on European musical life.
